Welcome to the website of the Kowloon City District Office.

To food-lovers both local and from afar, Kowloon City is a well-recognized gastronomic heaven. For some, Kowloon City stands for memories of a lifetime. With over 200 schools in the district, ranging from kindergartens to universities, generation after generation of students spent the most cherished years in their life here and become emotionally attached ever since. To the community of Hong Kong at large, the 'Sung Wong Toi' historical relic from the Sung Dynasty, the Kowloon Walled City and the old Kai Tak airport have sealed Kowloon City in our collective memories despite the facelifts of the district over the years. Looking ahead, the redevelopment of the Kai Tak site and the construction of the Shatin-Central Link would usher in yet another metamorphosis of this district which is rich in both its heritage and development potential.

Kowloon City is a place of diversity, its demographic profile ranges from the elderly to the youngsters and from old kai-fongs to new arrivals and ethnic minorities. How to integrate different social groups into a harmonious community, how to ensure facilities and measures in the district would meet the needs of the residents, and how to assist the District Council in carrying out community building and minor works projects, are key objectives of the Kowloon City District Office.

The HKSAR Government values public engagement, and District Office is in the front-line of canvassing citizens' views and putting across government policies. Communication with residents and local organizations is our priority. I hope that residents can get to know more about our work through this website. Profile (Kowloon City District)

The area of Kowloon City District is about 1000 hectares, with a population of about 418 700 ^note. It is divided into five sub-districts – Hung Hom, To Kwa Wan, Lung Tong (comprising Kowloon City and Kowloon Tong), Ho Man Tin and Kai Tak. The district is mainly a residential area. The majority of the residents reside in private sector housing, including old tenement buildings, private residential developments and low-rise villas; while the rest of them reside in public rental housing and Home Ownership Scheme estates.

Although predominantly residential in nature, the district has a fair share of commercial and industrial activities. Commercial activities abound in the bustling streets in Kowloon City as well as in the shopping malls of Whampoa Garden and public housing estates within the district, while industrial activities are mainly confined to the Tokwawan and Hunghom sub-districts.

With over 200 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, the Kowloon City District has the highest concentration of schools in the territory. The Hong Kong Baptist University and the Hong Kong Metropolitan University are also located in the district. There is also a wide range of cultural and recreational facilities in the district, such as the Ko Shan Theatre, the Kowloon Central Library, the Kowloon Tsai Park-cum-Swimming Pool and the Ho Man Tin Leisure Centre, to cater for recreational needs of the local residents.

Kowloon City District is a very distinctive place. Its Kowloon Walled City was one of the earliest developments in the territory. In 1993, the Kowloon Walled City was reconstructed as the Walled City Park where many relics of historical value have been preserved. After years of development, there are now a 5-star hotel and large private housing estates within the district. The removal of the Kai Tak airport has also spared a vast piece of land at the northern shore of the Victoria Harbour with high potential for redevelopment. Infrastructural projects in the redevelopment area are underway and the Kowloon City District will surely experience another drastic change in the near future.
