Welcome Message from Miss Amy YEUNG, JP, District Officer (Islands)
Islands District is known for its diversity. It is a community in which the city lies harmoniously with the countryside, where the traditional meets the modern. We have residents whose forefathers had made this place their home more than a century ago. We also have newly arrived residents coming from all corners of the world. Casually strolling about, one may find a fishing village meeting his eyes, reminding him of the good old days. And just as unexpectedly, on the other side of the mountain may spread a new town as a testimony of our efforts in striving for a better tomorrow.
Islands District is the largest of the 18 administrative districts in terms of area, and its potential for development is huge. Major infrastructure, such as the Hong Kong International Airport, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link, make it a transportation hub to overseas destinations and to our motherland, with endless development opportunities.
We have long been enjoying close cooperation with stakeholders of the district. Through district minor works projects and community involvement activities, we have improved the environment and facilities of the district and enhanced cohesion in our community. The two projects under the Signature Project Scheme of Islands District, namely improvement works at Silvermine Bay Beach, Mui Wo and North Lamma Public Library cum Heritage and Cultural Showroom on Lamma Island have been completed and are open to the public since 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Profile (Islands District)
Islands District consists of more than twenty large and small islands lying to the south and southwest of Hong Kong Island. The larger islands include the Lantau Island, Lamma Island, Cheung Chau and Peng Chau. Among the 18 administrative districts in Hong Kong, Islands District is the largest in terms of area.
Islands District has a population of around 185 000 with the majority of which living in Tung Chung New Town, while the rest live in Cheung Chau, Peng Chau, Lamma Island, Tai O, Mui Wo, South Lantau, and Discovery Bay, etc.
Lantau Island is filled with famous attractions, including the Hong Kong Disneyland, Ngong Ping 360 and the Big Buddha. The unparalleled natural scenery and coastal landscape of Islands District have been a draw for local people and foreign visitors. In addition, the unique features of festive events organised by local residents, such as the Cheung Chau Bun Festival and floating colours parade, all have attracted large numbers of visitors.
The Government is taking forward the Tung Chung New Town Extension (TCNTE) Project as a key measure to increase land supply. The proposed TCNTE will cover areas on the eastern and western flanks of the existing Tung Chung New Town and is expected to provide close to 50 000 residential flats. Land has been reserved in the extension area for commercial, recreational, educational and community uses. The TCNTE mainly comprises reclamation of the seabed to form a total of 130 hectares of land and implementation of associated environmental mitigation measures. It is also the first public works project to adopt the design of eco-shorelines.
The Government embraces the principle of “Development in the North; Conservation for the South” in accordance with the Sustainable Lantau Blueprint. It is committed to promoting ecological and cultural conservation of the rural areas of Lantau, including setting up a $1 billion Lantau Conservation Fund, conducting various studies relating to ecological and cultural conservation, and promoting sustainable leisure and recreation activities such as the Lantau Trails and Recreation Plan.
